FBD: Plzensky Prazdroj reports sales decline in 2009 (Czech Republic)

February 03 2010 - Plzensky Prazdroj, one of the oldest breweries of the Czech Republic, said that its overall sales in 2009 reached over 10.5 million hectolitres, reporting moderate decline of 1.9% year-on-year.

According to the company the economic slowdown and lower tourism continued to impact consumption of Prazdroj brands in the domestic market by estimated 4.5%. The performance of Plzensky Prazdroj was broadly in line with domestic market. Overall Prazdroj sold 7.55 mio hl. of beers in the Czech Republic. Foreign sales went up by 7.2% driven by the licensed production double digit increase.
 
Premium brands from the portfolio of Plzeňský Prazdroj maintained sales volumes supported by rapid growth of 11° gravity segment, which has more than doubled. Velkopopovicky Kozel delivered outstanding results and its 11° variety achieved 21% growth on the domestic market. The newly launched 11°Excelent in the family of the Czech best seller Gambrinus saw a tremendous success. The company’s flagship brand Pilsner Urquell achieved excellent sales towards the end of the year.

The beers produced by Plzeňský Prazdroj have continued to strengthen their reputation worldwide. Foreign sales volumes comprised from the licensed production and export were up by 7.2% mainly due to increased sales in Russia.
