January 15 2010 - According to Romanian media reports, Dutch brewing giant Heineken is planning to close one of its local breweries located in the city of Hateg (Western Romania) and to fire nearly 100 workers.
One of the main reasons of such decision is the company’s plans to increase efficiency and consolidate its position in the market.
The production capacities from Hateg will be transferred by Heineken to its other Romanian breweries in Miercurea Ciuc, Targu Mures, Craiova and Constanta.
The company has already assured that it would provide dismissed employees severance-pay packages and open a professional reorientation centre in the area.
Heineken stopped malt production in Hateg in October, making 61 employees redundant. Heineken said it would buy the product from suppliers.
Currently Heineken Romania owns 5 breweries Romania, in the cities of Constanta, Craiova, Hateg, Miercurea-Ciuc and Targu Mures and employs 1,100 people.
