By Eugene Vorotnikov FoodBizDaily.com Moscow

November 26 2009 - Metro Cash & Carry is considering the possibility of starting the expansion of the Russian Siberian region through the construction of its first hypermarket in the city of Kemerovo.

According to Russian media, CEO of Metro Cash & Carry Necati Akın Bayer has already had talks with the head of the city about the possibility of launching the project.

According to Metro’s CEO, the construction of  a new hypermarket will give an impetus to the development of whole retail trade in the region.

The amount of investments in the store is estimated at the level of 22 million euros, with the total staff  ranging from 250 to 400 people, and with more than 5,000 suppliers. In addition, the concept of METRO is based on working with local producers.

Currently Metro has 5 hypermarkets in Russian Siberia.

The first Kemerovo’s hypermarket will be located close to the downtown of the city in the area with high transport accessibility.

The launch of the project is scheduled for 2010.

Currently the German group trades in 33 countries and continues to strengthen its presence in important emerging markets. In Russia, the group has no intention of following Carrefour's lead and withdrawing from the market.

Metro remains committed to the country and in October opened its 50th Russian Metro Cash & Carry in Kirow.
