Across all product categories, more companies are altering their manufacturing practices in order to become more sustainable and less wasteful of the earths natural resources. Carbon footprint tracking is one means for some manufacturers to closely monitor their impact on the environment. The latest sustainability-based initiative to enter the consumer packaged goods industry is a practice called water footprint tracking. A water footprint indicates the amount of water used both directly and indirectly by consumers or producers. Kraft Foods Cuts Water Used in Manufacturing by 21% from Bloomberg.com states Kraft Foods plants are recycling and fixing leaks, while water frozen in basement pools cools the Northfield, Illinois headquarters." This months Innovations Club highlights a hot cereal brand launched by Ravintoraisio in Finland called Elovena Oat Flakes that comes packaged in a carton marked with its total water footprint per 100g of cereal. Ravintoraisio is one of the first food companies to label its products packaging with a water footprint indicator. Elovena Oat Flakes were processed with steam and did not require irrigationan artificial application of water to soil that typically serves to help grow crops in dry areas deprived of regular rainfall. Along with its water footprint indicator, this Finnish hot cereal product also carries a carbon footprint mark on-pack. Water footprint tracking is a very novel concept.
