July 1, 2009 – The World Bank has approved a USD 197 million credit to India to increase the agricultural productivity of degraded lands in northern state of Uttar Pradesh.
"This will help improve food security for thousands of poor farming households through increased productivity and cropping intensity," the multilateral lending agency said in a statement.
The Third Uttar Pradesh Sodic Lands Reclamation Project builds on the achievements of the first two such projects in the state that helped reclaim over 2,50,000 hectares of unproductive land, the bank said.
"More than 4,25,000 poor families have benefited so far, experiencing three- to six-fold increase in crop yields. The new project is expected to directly benefit over 3,25,000 farm families," World Bank Country Director for India Roberto Zagha said.
