July 30 2009 - After obtaining favorable results in the first half of the year, the Brazilian supermarket sector already anticipates almost double the growth for this year compared to previous growth projections that were more cautious because of the economic crisis. The estimation is that the sector will grow 2.5% to 4.5% against 2008, according to the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras).

July 30 2009- India’s spices exports have declined by 19% in volume and 12% in value during April-June 2009. According to Spices Board of India, the export of spices showed a decline with 122,515 tons in April-June 2009 as against 150,920 tons in the corresponding period last year.

June 27 2009 - Those who fancy chocolates from China are in for a shock with the Government banning import of chocolates and chocolate products from that country. The Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mr Anand Sharma, said in the Lok Sabha on Monday that the ban was imposed following reports that Chinese dairy products contained traces of melamine.

July 21, 2009 – The Government of India today said in the Parliament that it has allowed companies to import raw sugar and process it in the country to increase availability of sugar in the domestic market. Apprehending that sugar price may go up during the festival season come October due to lower production of sugar and sugarcane the government took the decision.

July 21 2009 - A weak US currency is expected to put fresh pressure on rice prices just a year after a global supply crunch caused the cereal to rocket above 1,000 dollars a tonne, the International Rice Research Institute said. The situation "suggests that a falling dollar will keep rice (and commodity) prices higher," according to the latest edition of the institute's bimonthly publication "Rice Today".

July 16 2009 - Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) is acquiring a 32.41% stake of Taiwan's leading agro-industrial and food firm for 826 million baht, as part of its ambitious overseas business expansion.
The listed flagship subsidiary of the agribusiness giant Charoen Pokphand Group said yesterday that through its wholly owned investment arm CPF Investment Limited (CPFI), CPF would buy 75,194,164 shares of paid-up capital from five existing shareholders of Charoen Pokphand Enterprise (Taiwan) Co (CPE). The transaction would be completed in the current quarter.

July 16 2009 - China-based producers and users of palm oil said they will provide more support for sustainable palm oil, reports WWF. The move could boost efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of the world's most productive oilseed.
In a public statement issued at the 2nd International Oil and Fats Summit in Beijing on July 9, leading palm oil industry companies committed to "support the promotion, procurement and use of sustainable palm oil in China” and to “support the production of sustainable palm oil through any investments in producing countries.”

July 15, 2009 – India’s vegetable oils import has increased by 31%. The import data compiled by the Solvent Extractors Association (SEA) for the import of vegetable oils for first eight months of the oil year 2008-09, beginning with November 2008 shows an unusual increase in import volume. The data which published today by the SEA shows that overall import of vegetable oil during November 2008 to June 2009 jumped by 79% to 5,823,864 tons from 3,567,123 tons for the same period of last year. Import during June 2009 is reported at 780,679 tons compared to 593,730 tons for June...

July 15 2009 - Fruit farmers and the government are eyeing the export market as they work together to improve the quality of Myanmar mangoes. The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and Myanmar Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association (MFVP) plan to register mango farms in upper and lower Myanmar to provide the technical support needed to bring the product up to export quality, U Win Aung , the president of association, told The Myanmar Times earlier this month.

July 13 2009 - Chilean orange exports rose more than 200% with the beginning of this season from 5,309 to 16,781 tons, reported the Market Intelligence System of the Chilean Fruit SIMFRUIT. Shipments, moreover, have increased in several non-traditional markets like the Far East, Canada and Latin America with emphasis to the Far East market which increased by 1,200% the last season from 300 tons to 4,100 tons.

July 13 2009 - TOKYO — Japan's top two beverage makers, Kirin and Suntory, are considering merging their operations, a Suntory spokesman said Monday.
